Why convert AVIF to JPG?

A growing number of phones and cameras now save photos as AVIF by default, since it produces meaningfully smaller files than JPEG at comparable visual quality — often smaller than WebP, too, at the same quality setting. That's genuinely useful for storage and upload speed, but AVIF to JPG conversion is often what you need next, because AVIF is still a newer format and plenty of everyday software hasn't caught up to it yet.

In practice, that means an AVIF photo straight off your phone can fail to open in older versions of Windows Photo Viewer or macOS Preview, get rejected by Microsoft Office's "Insert Picture" dialog on older builds, or simply refuse to upload to a CMS or blogging platform — WordPress versions before 6.x, for instance, don't recognize the format at all. Some photo-printing kiosks and local print shops have the same gap. Converting to JPG sidesteps all of that by producing a file every app, printer, and platform already knows how to handle.

AVIF still has its place

None of this is a knock against AVIF itself — its compression efficiency is excellent, which is exactly why it's showing up as a camera default. Frequently asked questions

Why did my phone save a photo as AVIF?

Many modern phones and cameras now default to AVIF because it produces noticeably smaller files than JPEG at the same visual quality, saving storage space and upload bandwidth. Some screenshot and screen-recording tools have started doing the same.

Why won't my AVIF photo open in some apps?

AVIF is still a newer format, so older versions of Windows Photo Viewer, macOS Preview, and Microsoft Office's Insert Picture dialog may lack decode support. Many CMS media libraries, including WordPress versions before 6.x, and some print-shop kiosks also can't read it yet.

Do I lose quality converting AVIF to JPG?

There is a small amount of re-compression loss since JPG is also a lossy format, but at 85% quality or higher the difference is negligible for typical photos. Use the quality slider to control the tradeoff.
